CBA 2012 Conference - Portland, OR

May 30th to June 3rd, 2012, the Community Built Association will be hosting a  gathering of artists, builders, architects & designers, gardeners, and others who engage the community in projects to transform the places and spaces in which we live.   This conference will feature amazing presentations from people leading their fields in community-based practice; rich hands-on workshops at our conference location; visits to ‘placemaking’ build sites around the city; connections with Portlandia culture through home-stays, bike tours, and collaborations with other local community orgs.  It is shaping up to be an amazing event!

We are fortunate to be partnering with some wonderful community organizations here it Portland to make it happen.  We will be hosted by a wonderful neighborhood community center called Tabor Space, which will also be our base of operations for some great hands-on workshops.  The conference will be concurrent with the final weekend of the Village Building Convergence, this 10-day annual event organized by Portland’s City Repair Project. We will be converging with the Convergence through workshops, site visits and evening gatherings.  Additionally, CBA conference attendees will have the option participating in all Village Building Convergence activities, which kick off on May 25th.

This conference will feature presentations form experienced community builders on topics including:

  • Participatory Design
  • Public Art
  • Barn-Raising 101
  • Community Play Spaces
  • Community Gardens

There will also be…

  • 3 days of Hands-On Workshops at TaborSpace,
  • Bicycle Tours of Portland community built sites.
  • Access to the Village Building Convergence events, including over 30 natural building sites around the city!
  • Open Space for spontaneous discussion groups!
  • On-site coffee shop!
  • Community farm-to-table diners.
  • Lunches from fine Portland eateries.
  • Home-stays with local Portland folks ($10 suggested donation/day)
  • The full range of hotel and hostel options that Portland has to offer!

Admission to all Conference Programming: speakers, hands-on workshops, and evening events.  Schedule coming soon!

Food!   We are excited to provide a variety of fresh, local, shared meals.  Diners will be cooked in house by our community kitchen.  Lunches will be provided by local Portland restaurants.  One lunch and one diner will be held off-site, and additional cost will be required.  Breakfast will not be provided, though the Café at TaborSpace will have coffee and breakfast treats available on site.

What is not included?

Housing:  In order to provide a less expensive conference, and help to create some great connections in the process, we are organizing Home-Stays with wonderful Portland hosts rather than hosting our conference in a hotel.  There are certainly options for hostel bunks or nice hotel rooms not too far from our conference venue.

Transportation:  Those staying in homes should be able to walk, bike, or catch a ride to TaborSpace, our conference venue.  Shuttle service may be available from some hotel locations.   Transportation from TaborSpace to off-site conference programming will be provided.

Some Food: One lunch and one diner will be held off-site, and additional cost will be required.  Breakfast will not be provided, though the Café at TaborSpace will have coffee and breakfast treats available on site.

Where is the Conference being held?
A wonderful neighborhood community center in SE Portland called TaborSpace will be hosting our gathering this year.

Do you plan on attending the Village Building Convergence as well as CBA? This amazing 10-Day event begins on May 25th, and includes numerous “place-making’ build sites around the city as well as workshops and evening gatherings.  CBA will be collaborating with the VBC in some exciting ways during our conference days, but all attendees are invited to come early to get the full experience of this 10 day event!  If you are interested in attending the VBC in addition to CBA, sign up for our mailing list on the right side of this page and we will make sure you receive all of the event info.
